A New Surgical Service Now Offered at Intermedcenter
Physicians are still debating whether circumcision is beneficial from a medical point of view. Circumcision has some proven benefits such as improved hygiene and a decreased incidence of UTI and infections of the foreskin. Smegma, a thick, white substance which can accumulate under the foreskin, is believed to be slightly carcinogenic. Smegma does not accumulate after circumcision. Circumcision also helps to decrease the incidence of STD’s, including HIV infection. In some African countries it is promoted as a measure to decrease the transmission of the HIV virus.
In our clinic we perform circumcisions using a Gomco clamp (most of the circumcisions in the USA are done using this device). Using a Gomco clamp makes this procedure possible usually without bleeding, gives good cosmetic results, and provides a quick recovery. Circumcision with a Gomco clamp is done in an ambulatory or outpatient (office) setting.
At the Intermedcenter we can perform circumcisions in babies as young as 5 days old.
